Hummingbird Highway
The Columbines are coming up down by the gate,
I’ve poured out the sugar water on a broken plate,
And I’ve dressed up my best dolls to celebrate,
You’re coming home from the hummingbird highway.
But the hour has come and the hour has past,
And just when I think that they’ve gotten you at last,
Yeah the pirates have tied you to a galleon’s mast,
You’re coming home from the hummingbird highway,
Every time you round the bend,
I’ll jump into your arms again,
You know my kind, I’m the hummingbird’s friend,
I’ll help you find your way back home.
You’re laying out the treasures you brought for me,
The cinnamon bark from the cinnamon tree,
And the stone that you saw clear to the bottom of the sea,
Back from the Hummingbird Highway.
But I never could imagine I never could’ve guessed,
You’re opening the clasp on a tiny golden chest,
It’s a hummingbird shell in a hummingbird nest,
Back from the Hummingbird Highway.
Every time you round the bend,
I’ll jump into your arms again,
You know my kind, I’m the hummingbird’s friend,
I’ll help you find your way back home.
And the hummingbird you know he never sings,
The humming comes from his flapping wings,
And he only likes the sweetest things,
Only likes the sweetest things.
I’m putting out the cinnamon rolls while they’re hot,
I’m pouring out the tea from China blue pot,
And I hope that you’re happy but I know that you’re not,
Back from the Hummingbird Highway.
You say it’s the older you feel, it’s the older I get,
Your highest of highs are your deepest regret,
And no one ever tells you that you’ve gotten there yet,
Out on the Hummingbird Highway.
But you know I know sometimes instead,
You just get lost inside your head,
And sometimes can’t get out of bed,
But now you’re getting out of bed
And here you come around the bend,
The pirates sent you back again,
I’ll raise my flag, I’m the hummingbird’s friend,
I’ll help you find your way…
Every time you round the bend,
I”ll jump into your arms again,
We’ll fly, we’ll fly, we’ll fly.
Every time you round the bend,
I’ll jump into your arms again,
You know my kind, I’m the hummingbird’s friend,
I’ll help you find your way back home.
